Microsoft Virtual PC, and XP? Then again Virtual Box works better for me.
It could be a random act of randomness. Those happen a lot as well.

Sorry for all the Q's (heads full of the red stuff  :P)
I'm holding back on any installations on the new kit until I can clarify bits and pieces (oxymoron  :bg)

I heard that there's an XP 'compatibility' mode (XP).. does this work ok ?
Masm32 V11 - does this work OK in Win7-64 or does it require XP.
Which linker and Assembler/compiler (ugh) works in I64

Danke

XP-Compatibility uses the aforementioned Virtual PC, and it downloads an XP image. Basically you have to grab some upgrades, and install to get XP mode. You can push USB peripherals into the virtual machine, and this has permitted the use of some XP drivers, and COM port redirection code that doesn't work in Win7. Also other apps that don't play well in Win7, older versions of ATMEL's SAM-BA for instance. The integration of the XP mode is a bit awkward, you access the host's drives through network shares, screen resolution and colours might be limited. It's a bit like accessing a remote box via VNC.

16-bit DOS/WIN/OS2 applications don't run in Win7, which can be a pain and forces me to recompile some 90's era code, stuff that has work serviceably enough for two decades. So figure OLD versions of MASM (pre 6), and OLD Microsoft & Borland languages.

MASM32 V11 installed and ran just fine on a Win7 Ultimate 64-bit box, installed it the other weekend. Don't expect the 16-bit linker to work.

Sure? I thought that was the whole point for making XP mode available... ::)

Bill is pukking the rest..  :8)

So far, every 16 bit app I came across, all ran fine with Win7 and DOSBox.

On a plus side, VirtualBox runs great with Win7, I can run Win2K and XP at the same time with NO lag which comes in handy testing your apps.

But it's not native, it's running in a sandbox, the thing I'm pointing at is a virtual machine into which XP is installed. Like a Mac running XP, yes but not really.

Your mileage may vary, but here's what Win 7 64-bit says

I:\TOOLS\C510\BIN>cl
"This version of I:\TOOLS\C510\BIN\CL.EXE is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need a x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher."

DOSBox is an emulator right? But at least it's more tightly integrated.

Yes, and?  If I want to write 16bit apps, and since I cannot run them on Win7, I use DOSBox.  If I want to run old DOS games, that is what I use also.

And, I can't mix-n-match tools and applications and run them from the console. Something I can do with NT thru XP, and at damn near native speeds, cause it's virtualized, not emulated.

All seems Ok with Masm32.. I've also run a few other 32 bit proggies with no complaints from the system... I wonder if this is 64Bit  :bg
